"What if healing is not simply moving forward through time... but learning to exist differently within it?"
At Soft Rebellion, I enjoy exploring metaphysical ideas as invitations to think differently, not as established scientific conclusions. What follows is one such theory, a philosophical reflection that weaves together symbolism, psychology, mythology, and imagination.
Time Is Not Always Experienced the Same Way
A clock measures seconds.
The human experience measures meaning.
An hour spent laughing with someone you love can disappear in what feels like moments. Five minutes of fear can seem endless.
Science recognizes that our perception of time changes depending on emotion, attention, and memory. Metaphysical traditions often take this one step further, proposing that healing changes not only how we remember our past, but also how we inhabit the present.
Perhaps healing doesn't rewrite history.
Perhaps it changes our relationship with history.
The Invisible Dimensions We Carry
When most people hear the word dimension, they imagine alternate universes or science fiction.
But perhaps dimensions can also be understood symbolically.
Imagine the human experience unfolding through several overlapping dimensions:
🌱 The Physical Dimension
The body.
Breath.
Movement.
Nutrition.
Sleep.
The tangible world.
🌊 The Emotional Dimension
Feelings rarely obey calendars.
Grief may revisit twenty years later.
Joy can return because of one familiar scent.
Our emotional world seems to fold time, carrying yesterday into today until we gently learn to set it down.
🧠 The Cognitive Dimension
This is the landscape of beliefs, memories, expectations, and perception.
The stories we tell ourselves shape the reality we experience.
Sometimes healing begins not by changing the world...
...but by changing the lens through which we see it.
✨ The Symbolic Dimension
Humans are meaning-making creatures.
We dream.
We create myths.
We notice synchronicities.
We find significance in seasons, stars, animals, numbers, and archetypes.
Whether these symbols arise from the psyche, culture, spirituality, or something beyond our current understanding, they often serve as bridges between inner experience and outer life.
🌌 The Dimension of Possibility
Perhaps every choice opens a different future.
Not because we literally split into countless universes every moment, but because each decision reshapes the landscape of what becomes possible.
Healing expands possibility.
Trauma often narrows it.
Hope widens it again.
Healing as Movement Across Dimensions
What if healing is less like climbing a mountain...
...and more like tuning an instrument?
The instrument remains the same.
The music changes.
The experiences that once felt overwhelming may still exist within our story, but they no longer define every note we play.
Healing becomes a process of resonance.
Mind.
Body.
Emotion.
Relationship.
Purpose.
Each gradually finding harmony with the others.
Time as a Spiral Rather Than a Line
Many ancient cultures understood time differently than we often do today.
Instead of imagining time as a straight road stretching from past to future, they often viewed it as cyclical or spiral shaped.
This perspective offers an interesting metaphor.
Have you ever thought you had completely healed from something...
Only to discover similar emotions resurfacing years later?
Perhaps this isn't failure.
Perhaps you've returned to the same place carrying greater wisdom.
The scenery feels familiar.
You are not.
Each pass through the spiral offers another opportunity to respond differently.
The Mythological Mirror
Nearly every culture tells stories of journeys into darkness followed by transformation.
The phoenix rises through fire.
Persephone returns each spring.
Inanna descends into the underworld and emerges transformed.
These stories continue to resonate because they mirror something profoundly human.
Healing often asks us to enter the places we once avoided.
Not to remain there...
But to return carrying light.
Space Is More Than Geography
Healing also changes the way we occupy space.
The same room can feel oppressive during one season of life and comforting during another.
The same city can represent heartbreak...
...or freedom.
Perhaps space is not simply where we are.
Perhaps it is also how we are.
A Soft Rebellion Perspective
I don't believe every mystery needs solving.
Some ideas are worth exploring simply because they invite us to ask better questions.
Maybe healing is not about becoming someone new.
Maybe it is about gradually aligning the many dimensions of who we have always been.
Body.
Mind.
Emotion.
Imagination.
Relationship.
Purpose.
Hope.
Perhaps they have been patiently waiting for one another all along.
A Question to Leave You With
If time, healing, and possibility are more connected than we often imagine...
What future version of yourself is quietly reaching back, hoping you'll believe they're possible?
Maybe...
Just maybe...
The person you're becoming has been cheering for you since the very beginning.
