Bring Back Hobbies You’re Absolutely Mediocre At

Somewhere along the way, hobbies became suspiciously productive.

You start painting and suddenly someone asks if you sell your work.

You bake a beautiful cake and apparently you should start taking orders.

You make jewellery twice and now the internet would like you to build your brand.

Can we please bring back doing things we're completely mediocre at?

You’re Allowed to Be Bad at Something

Paint the wonky flower.

Attempt pottery and accidentally create an ashtray.

Learn three chords on the guitar and perform them repeatedly for six months.

Grow vegetables that emerge looking mildly concerned.

The point of a hobby isn't necessarily to become impressive.

Sometimes the point is simply:

I enjoyed doing that.

And that's enough.

Not Everything Needs to Make Money

Turning something you love into income can be wonderful.

But the minute money enters the room, so do deadlines, customers, expectations, marketing and approximately fourteen passwords.

Some things deserve to remain completely useless.

Make something nobody will buy.

Write something nobody will read.

Dance without filming it.

Take photographs that never leave your camera roll.

Create purely because being human is strange and making things feels good.

Be a Beginner Again

Adults don't get many opportunities to be terrible at things.

We naturally gravitate towards what we already know how to do.

But there's something wonderfully freeing about saying:

“I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.”

No reputation to maintain.

No standard to meet.

Just curiosity.

Your Hobby Doesn’t Need a Future

You don't need to become a painter.

You can paint.

You don't need to become a gardener.

You can grow one extremely determined tomato.

You don't need to become anything at all.

Try things. Abandon some of them. Become obsessed with something completely random for three months.

Then wander off and learn something else.

Life doesn't need to become a collection of achievements.

Sometimes it's allowed to be a collection of things you tried simply because they looked fun.

So pick something you're mediocre at.

Do it badly.

Enjoy yourself enormously.

And whatever you do...

You don't always need to make a business plan for it. 🌿 or do !!!
