Enjoy the Achievements You’ve Made This Year

Published on September 26, 2026 at 12:00 AM

We spend an extraordinary amount of time thinking about what’s next.

The next goal.
The next problem to solve.
The next thing to buy, build, fix, finish or figure out.

And somewhere in all that forward motion, we completely forget to look behind us.

So, for a moment, forget what you haven’t done yet.

What have you done in the last year?

You’ve Probably Done More Than You Think

Not every achievement arrives with a certificate, promotion or dramatic announcement.

Maybe you started something.

Maybe you finally ended something.

Maybe you learned a new skill, found a new job, paid something off, created something from nothing or tried something you were absolutely terrible at.

Maybe you became better at saying no.

Maybe you handled a situation differently than the version of you from a year ago would have.

Maybe you survived a year that required far more from you than anyone realised.

Those count.

Actually, some of them count quite a lot.

Stop Moving the Finish Line

Humans have a peculiar habit.

We desperately want something.

Then we get it.

We enjoy it for approximately eleven minutes before our brain wanders over and says:

Lovely. What’s next?

😂

Suddenly the achievement that once felt enormous becomes ordinary.

The thing you once hoped for becomes part of everyday life, and because it’s familiar now, you forget how much effort it took to get there.

Don’t do that to yourself.

You are allowed to sit with an accomplishment for a while.

You are allowed to be proud before becoming productive again.

Remember the Version of You From a Year Ago

Think about where you were this time last year.

What were you worrying about?

What were you hoping would change?

What hadn’t happened yet?

What did you not know how to do?

What felt impossible then that feels completely normal now?

There are things in your current life that an earlier version of you would probably be rather impressed by.

Let her be.

Celebrate the Quiet Wins Too

Perhaps this year didn’t come with one enormous, shiny achievement.

Fine.

Count the smaller ones.

The boundaries.

The uncomfortable conversations.

The applications you submitted.

The things you created.

The mornings you got up when you really didn’t fancy it.

The new ideas.

The risks.

The times you changed your mind.

The moments you chose yourself.

The things you tried simply because you were curious.

A life is built from those moments far more often than from grand announcements.

Before You Ask What’s Next...

Take inventory.

Write down ten things you’ve accomplished, changed, learned or survived in the last year.

Tiny things count.

Ridiculous things count.

Things nobody else knows about count.

Then actually look at the list.

Because growth becomes strangely invisible when you’re standing inside it.

There will always be another goal waiting.

It can wait five minutes.

You’ve come some distance, darling. Have a look around. 🌿
