Making Friends Over 40: Apparently We Need an Appointment

Making friends over 40 is a peculiar little social experiment.

When we were younger, friendship happened accidentally. You sat next to someone in class, worked the same shift, shared a questionable bottle of something at a party, and suddenly you were best friends for seven years.

Now?

You meet someone lovely and immediately have to conduct a silent assessment.

Do I actually like her?
Does she seem emotionally stable-ish?
Will she expect me to leave my house constantly?
Is she going to call me without texting first?

Because boundaries.

At this age, friendship isn't necessarily difficult. We're just more selective about who gets access to our time, energy and increasingly sacred sofa.

The Adult Friendship Interview

Meeting a potential new friend after 40 feels suspiciously similar to dating.

You have coffee.

You exchange small pieces of personal information.

You casually investigate whether they're completely unhinged.

And somewhere around the second cappuccino, you're thinking:

Okay... I could see myself sending her inappropriate memes.

Promising.

Nobody tells you how exciting it is to find another grown woman who understands that cancelling plans doesn't automatically mean the friendship is in crisis.

Sometimes it simply means:

I took my bra off.

The evening has concluded.

We Don't Need to Talk Every Day

One of the loveliest things about friendship at this age is realizing that closeness doesn't require constant access.

We can disappear into work, children, relationships, healing, businesses, laundry mountains and general life nonsense.

Then three weeks later:

“Are you alive?”

“Barely. You?”

“Same.”

And we're right back where we left off.

Beautiful.

Efficient.

Very sophisticated.

The Friendship Standards Have Changed

At this point, I don't need twenty friends.

Give me a handful of people who are kind, interesting, slightly ridiculous and capable of having conversations deeper than celebrity gossip.

Although celebrity gossip may still be discussed.

We're mature, not deceased.

I want friendships where we can talk about psychology, dreams, money, relationships, strange theories about the universe and whether we should completely reinvent our lives on a random Tuesday.

And then immediately send each other a picture of a dog wearing sunglasses.

Range.

Making New Friends Is Still Possible

This is the part we sometimes forget.

You haven't missed the friendship boat because you're 40, 45, 52 or 73.

There are people you haven't met yet who are going to make you laugh until your face hurts.

People you'll meet through work, classes, hobbies, volunteering, business, community events, online spaces or completely random circumstances.

You don't need to force it.

Just remain slightly available to the possibility.

Say hello.

Accept the occasional invitation.

Start the conversation.

Tell someone you like their coat.

Friendship has started over far stranger things.

And Please, Keep Your Standards

Being lonely for a moment does not mean everyone deserves a VIP pass into your life.

You are allowed to want friendships that feel mutual.

People who check in.

People who celebrate you without secretly competing with you.

People who can disagree without turning it into a courtroom drama.

People who understand that friendship should add something lovely to life, not become another administrative responsibility.

We're over 40.

We've already got passwords to remember.

The Soft Rebellion Bit

Maybe making friends now isn't about rebuilding the enormous social circles we had when we were younger.

Maybe it's about finding your people.

The ones who understand your strange little references.

The ones who don't require a performance.

The ones you can laugh with, be quiet with, grow with and occasionally text:

“I know we made plans, but would you be devastated if we didn't?”

And they reply:

“Thank God.”

That's friendship.

Elegant. Mature. Emotionally intelligent.

And preferably home before bedtime. 💚
