Sometimes we think we’re looking for closure when what we’re really looking for is an explanation.
Why did they do that?
Why didn’t they tell me?
What really happened?
Was any of it real?
Why wasn’t I enough?
Our minds love an unfinished story. Give them three missing pieces and they’ll happily spend six months attempting to become a private investigator.
But an explanation and closure aren’t quite the same thing.
An explanation comes from information. It may come from another person, discovering something you didn’t know before, or finally understanding why something happened.
Closure is different.
Closure can happen even when some of those answers never arrive.
It’s the point where you recognize that endlessly searching for an answer is no longer helping you live your life.
That doesn’t mean pretending you don’t care. It doesn’t mean forgiving something you aren’t ready to forgive, deciding something painful was secretly wonderful, or wrapping the whole experience in a neat little bow.
Sometimes closure sounds much simpler:
“I may never completely understand this, but I don’t need to stay here waiting for an answer.”
There is enormous freedom in that distinction.
You can grieve what happened and still move forward.
You can wish something had ended differently without reopening it.
You can love someone and recognize that their chapter in your life has ended.
You can have unanswered questions without allowing those questions to become the authors of everything that comes next.
Sometimes the mind believes one final piece of information will finally make everything settle into place.
Maybe it will.
But sometimes the peace we’re waiting for isn’t hiding inside the missing answer.
Sometimes we create it ourselves.
A Little Soft Rebellion ๐ฟ
Ask yourself:
Am I looking for information I genuinely need, or am I hoping another answer will finally give me permission to move forward?
If the answer never comes, what would creating your own closure look like?
You don’t have to erase the story.
You just get to decide when you’re ready to stop living inside the unanswered chapter.
An explanation tells you why.
Closure lets you continue anyway. ๐๏ธ
