The Older I Get, the Less I’m Buying It

There comes a point when things simply stop being impressive.

Not because you’re bitter. You’ve just been alive long enough to recognise good packaging with questionable contents.

I’m not buying that busy means successful.

I’m not buying that expensive means wealthy.

I’m not buying that a long relationship means a healthy one.

And I’m definitely not buying that everyone who speaks with confidence knows what the hell they’re talking about.

These days, I’m impressed by different things.

People who keep their word.
People who apologise without a 14-page defence.
People who are kind when nobody’s watching.
People who protect their peace without performing it for an audience.

My definition of wealth has changed too.

Time is wealth. Peace is wealth. Freedom is wealth. Having people around you who don’t make your nervous system perform gymnastics is wealth.

I still like beautiful things. Of course I do.

I simply stopped confusing a beautiful-looking life with a beautiful life.

The older I get, the less I’m buying into the noise.

And strangely enough, the less I buy into it, the more I appreciate what’s actually real.

That, I’m completely sold on.
