You’re Allowed to Have a Very Ordinary Thursday

Published on September 24, 2026 at 12:00 AM

Not every day needs to be transformational.

You do not need to wake up at 5 a.m., meditate beneath the sunrise, drink something violently green, reorganise your entire life and discover your purpose before lunch.

Sometimes it’s just Thursday.

And Thursday is allowed to be completely ordinary.

You can go to work. Come home. Eat something easy. Put comfortable clothes on. Watch something mildly ridiculous. Stand in the kitchen wondering why you walked into the kitchen.

That still counts as a life.

We’ve Made Ordinary Feel Like Failure

There’s an odd pressure now to make every day something.

Be productive.

Be improving.

Be healing.

Be building.

Be travelling.

Be achieving.

Be documenting yourself doing all of the above under flattering lighting.

But human beings cannot exist permanently in highlight-reel mode.

Some days are milestones.

Some days are adventures.

Some days change everything.

And some days you buy toilet paper, answer three emails and find a particularly good snack.

All valid.

You Don’t Need a Breakthrough Today

Personal growth is wonderful.

But you don't have to constantly investigate yourself like an unsolved crime.

You don't need to identify another pattern today.

You don't need to uncover a childhood wound while folding laundry.

You don't need to become the highest version of yourself by 7:30 p.m.

Perhaps today's version of you is tired and wants pasta.

Let her live.

Ordinary Days Are Where Most of Life Happens

Think about it.

The enormous moments are actually quite rare.

Most of life happens in tiny pieces.

Making coffee.

Driving somewhere familiar.

Laughing at something stupid.

Opening a window.

Talking to someone you love.

Changing the sheets.

Watching the sky get dark.

Finding $5 in an old coat pocket and briefly becoming financially unstoppable.

These things aren't interruptions between the important parts.

They are the important parts.

Try Having a Day Without Improving It

Here's a tiny Soft Rebellion experiment:

For one evening, don't optimise anything.

Don't turn your walk into cardio.

Don't turn your bath into a healing ritual.

Don't turn your hobby into a side hustle.

Don't turn your thoughts into content.

Don't measure whether you were productive enough to deserve rest.

Just do something because you rather fancy doing it.

Revolutionary, apparently.

Let Thursday Be Thursday

Maybe nothing extraordinary happened today.

Good.

You made it through another tiny square on the calendar.

You existed.

You noticed things.

You ate something.

You laughed, hopefully.

You survived whatever nonsense appeared.

And tomorrow will arrive without requiring you to have mastered today.

There will be days for big plans, strange adventures, ambitious ideas and spectacular reinventions.

But tonight?

Make something nice to eat.

Put your feet up.

Look out the window.

Ignore something non-urgent.

You’re allowed to have a very ordinary Thursday.

And frankly, Thursday seems relieved to hear it. 🌿
