Recognition vs. Pattern Recognition
Recognizing something and recognizing a pattern are not quite the same thing.
Recognition says: That hurt my feelings.
Pattern recognition says: Interesting. I seem to leave every conversation with this person feeling smaller.
Recognition notices the event.
Pattern recognition notices what keeps happening around the event.
It’s the difference between noticing someone cancelled plans and realizing they consistently disappear whenever you need them. Between noticing you’re exhausted today and realizing you become exhausted every time you agree to things you never wanted to do.
One moment can be misunderstood.
A repeated pattern gives you more information.
And this applies to ourselves too.
Maybe you don’t “randomly lose motivation.” Maybe you repeatedly lose motivation when you’re doing something solely for approval.
Maybe you don’t keep meeting the same type of person by accident. Maybe something familiar keeps feeling attractive, even when familiar hasn’t historically been very good for you.
Pattern recognition isn’t about becoming suspicious of everything or turning every coincidence into a sign.
It’s simply learning to zoom out.
Because sometimes the answer isn’t hidden.
It’s been repeating itself.
