We’re remarkably good at noticing what we haven’t done.
The email we still need to answer.
The money we meant to save.
The habit we were definitely starting on Monday.
The laundry currently developing its own government.
Meanwhile, everything we have managed somehow gets filed under:
Well, I was supposed to do that anyway.
Funny how that works.
We rarely give ourselves credit for the ordinary things that actually require quite a lot from us.
Getting up when we’re tired.
Going to work.
Taking care of people.
Making difficult decisions.
Starting over.
Trying again after something didn’t work.
Learning when we could have stayed comfortable.
Setting a boundary we once would have swallowed.
Walking away from something that no longer fits.
Choosing differently than we did five years ago.
None of it feels particularly impressive while we’re doing it.
But growth usually doesn’t.
Look Back a Little Further
Sometimes you need to stop measuring your life from last Tuesday.
Think about who you were a year ago.
Three years ago.
Five.
There are things you know now that once confused you.
Situations you handle differently.
Things you no longer tolerate.
Things you once desperately wanted that you’re now rather grateful you didn’t get.
You’ve changed in hundreds of tiny ways that are difficult to see because you were there for every single one of them.
It’s like watching your hair grow.
Nothing appears to be happening until one day you realise you desperately need a haircut.
Progress Isn’t Always Photogenic
Some progress comes with certificates, promotions, new homes and exciting announcements.
Other progress looks like:
I handled that better than I used to.
I didn’t chase an explanation this time.
I rested before I completely exhausted myself.
I asked for help.
I tried again.
I finally said no.
Because those quiet changes eventually become your life.
You Don’t Have to Be Finished
There will always be another thing to improve, learn, fix, organise or figure out.
That doesn’t mean you’re failing.
It means you’re alive.
You can be proud of yourself while still wanting more.
You can appreciate how far you’ve come while still having absolutely no idea what you’re doing next.
You can have unfinished business and still be doing beautifully.
So today, instead of immediately looking for the next thing that needs fixing, take a moment to notice what’s already changed.
The things you survived.
The things you learned.
The choices you make differently now.
The person you’ve quietly been becoming while you were busy worrying that you weren’t doing enough.
Because chances are...
you’re doing better than you think.
