Standards, Darling. Not Attitude.
There is a difference between being difficult and simply knowing what you will no longer tolerate.
Apparently, the moment you become selective with your time, energy, relationships, or environment, someone somewhere is bound to call it attitude.
How terribly convenient.
Standards are not about believing you are better than everyone else.
They are about knowing what works for you.
What feels respectful.
What feels healthy.
What feels aligned.
What you are willing to participate in — and what you are quite happy to decline.
You can be warm and still have boundaries.
You can be generous and still say no.
You can care deeply and still refuse to repeatedly accept behaviour that leaves you drained, disrespected, or diminished.
That is not attitude.
That is discernment.
The trouble is, people who benefited from your lack of boundaries may not particularly enjoy your new ones.
That is allowed.
Their discomfort does not automatically mean you are doing something wrong.
Soft Rebellion is not about becoming rigid, arrogant, or impossible to please.
It is about becoming honest enough with yourself to stop calling self-abandonment kindness.
Raise the standard.
Keep the grace.
And if someone mistakes the two?
Darling, that sounds rather like their misunderstanding to manage. ✨
